Alex Eastlake
Illustration & Art History
Alex Eastlake is double major in Illustration and Art History at the University of Colorado Denver, minoring in Leadership through the University Honors and Leadership program. Alex’s main areas of historical interest include Modern and contemporary art in Europe and the United States. Her Art History thesis research focuses on the illustrations of 19th century artist Frantisek Kupka, with a focus on the Money issue of French anarchist magazine L’Assiette au Beurre, as they relate to turn-of-the-century anarchist ideology.
Censorship in all forms is something Alex is passionate about, and she hopes to generate conversation and dismantle damaging taboos through her artwork as well as her scholarship. Alex’s studio work addresses themes such as access to contraception, stigmatization of tattoos, and sex education. In her illustrations, Alex primarily uses watercolor and digital illustration to create attractive, informative, and playful pieces. To Alex, illustration is a powerful tool for rendering difficult subjects in an approachable manner. In her Illustration thesis she has designed and illustrated an original board game inspired by the quarantine of 2020, which will be available on Kickstarter after graduation.
Alex Eastlake currently lives with her many plants and coffee machines in Denver After graduating in May of 2021, she plans on combining her passions for art and art history by working in a gallery or museum, and using her artistic practice to confront taboos and censorship.
